Livestock producers taking steps to keep animals cool amid “heat dome”

Livestock producers are doing what they can to keep animals cool during this week’s heatwave.

Brennen Toquam finishes hogs in southeast Minnesota and says water is critical.

“We have misters in the barn to try to keep them as cool as possible. They’re pretty little right now, we just got them in about a month ago.”

He tells Brownfield pigs tend to eat less the hotter it gets.

“Pigs are just like you and me, when we’re hot I don’t really like to eat a whole lot when I’m too warm. So trying to keep them cool and keep them eating and gaining weight is an uphill battle.”

Toquam says they are also using fans to keep the pigs as comfortable as possible with temperatures in the 90’s this week.
