Looking ahead to 2025 corn and soybean acres

An ag economist says there could be an acreage shift in 2025.

Matt Erickson, ag economic and policy advisor with Farm Credit Services of America, says one area he monitors is the soybean-to-corn price ratio. He says a lower ratio can indicate corn is fighting soybeans for acres. “That ratio has been relatively low in favor of corn,” he says.  “You look at whether producers are going to plant more corn or more soybeans. I think as we stand right now in February, I think we could have more corn acres than we initially thought.”

He tells Brownfield profitability will matter as farmers finalize their planting decisions for 2025. “The first report that we’re going to see here as an indicator for 2025-2026 crop is going to be the March prospective plantings report,” he says.

Erickson says that with the ongoing threat of tariffs, corn and soybean markets will be flooded with uncertainty and market volatility.
