Low prices and high input costs challenge SD farmer
A farmer in eastern South Dakota says it’s going to be tough to make money with the corn crop this year unless commodity prices get a boost.
Scott VanderWal tells Brownfield “we’re quite a ways short of breakeven right now where the market is, because of inflation and high costs.”
Vanderwal says seed prices are higher, chemical prices are mixed and “overall, we’re planting some of the most expensive crops we’ve ever planted the last few years.”
He fertilizer prices weren’t bad earlier this year and it’s unclear if that will change heading into fall and next year.
