Luttropp’s honored by Dairy Shrine
Some long-time dairy leaders were honored Monday evening at World Dairy Expo during the Dairy Shrine Awards Banquet, including two honored guests who left their mark on the show cattle world.
Jerry and Phyliss Luttropp have been dairying on a small farm near Berlin, Wisconsin since 1972, and they love the purebred cows and the people involved with them.
Jerry says their small family farm has had four cattle breeds over the years starting with Ayrshires, then Holsteins until the mid-1990s. “We bought the kids Brown Swiss show heifers on a whim, and that grew to a whole herd of Brown Swiss. From there on, we bought Jodi’s one brother a Jersey, and lo and behold, he picked up the ball on that and we have a whole herd of Jerseys.”
Phyliss grew up on a dairy with registered Holsteins but, “to this day, I have helped train animals, I’ve helped with every aspect at shows, but I have never shown one in the ring after 50 years.”
Now, the Luttropp’s son Jason tends to the day-to-day farming operation.
Jerry and Phyliss say they’re honored to be a part of a group of dairy leaders they’ve idolized for years.
Phyliss hints they should retire, but Jerry says he still enjoys helping out on the farm so they recently took two weeks off…joining the Professional Dairy Producers on a series of farm tours in Australia.
