Majority of Illinois corn and soybeans have emerged
Corn and soybeans across Illinois are emerging in a timely fashion putting this year’s crops ahead of the five-year average.
The USDA reports as of Sunday 86% of corn had emerged compared to 72% on average and 74% of soybeans had sprouted compared to the average 46%.
Corn planting has reached 95% complete with a crop rating of 80% good to excellent, up 9 percentage points on the week. Soybean planting is 89% finished and receiving a 67% good to excellent rating for the first soybean condition rating of the year.
Winter wheat is also progressing well with 95% of the crop headed and a rating of 87% good to excellent up three points from the week before. That is also the highest wheat rating for this week over the past 10 years.
Just over 70% of the first cutting of alfalfa hay is also complete.
