Majority of Illinois winter wheat in good shape

Most of the Illinois winter wheat crop is in good shape.

In the March crop progress report, the USDA says 56% of the state’s wheat crop is in good to excellent condition with 5% rated poor to very poor.

Seventy seven percent of the state reports adequate to surplus topsoil moisture, and 67% of Illinois subsoils show adequate to surplus moisture levels.

For the month of February, temperatures averaged 1.1 degrees below normal, while precipitation was 0.79 inches below average. 

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and conditions reports resume on April 7th.
