Manure offers “good bang for your buck”

An extension specialist encourages farmers to consider manure when making fall fertilizer plans.

Melissa Wilson with the University of Minnesota says manure contains nitrogen, phosphorous, and many other nutrients beneficial to crop health.

“There’s a lot of potassium, sulfur, and the micronutrients as well. So I think you are getting a good bang for your buck if you throw a year of manure application onto your fields because you’re replenishing some of those micronutrients and secondary nutrients that you might not often think of, especially with these tight margins.”

She tells Brownfield a manure nutrient analysis is important.

“So that you know at minimum what nitrogen and phosphorous you’re applying, and try not to overapply nitrogen. Particularly in Minnesota where you’re not allowed to do that.”

Wilson says proper application rates help protect the environment and improve farmer profitability.
