Manure vs. synthetic fertilizer: nutrient balance key for corn growers, expert says
Comparing the value of manure to synthetic fertilizers in corn production can be complicated.
University of Minnesota Extension specialist Melissa Wilson tells Brownfield farmers looking to manure as a cheaper alternative should consider which nutrients are most necessary.
“If you’re already high (in) phosphorous and potassium levels, then you’re not going to get as big of a bang from the manure because you’re not getting the use of what’s already in manure.”
But for fields low in P and K.
“You’re probably going to see more of a bang for your buck because you’re getting all of those added nutrients with the manure.”
Brownfield interviewed Wilson at the Nutrient Management Conference in Mankato, Minnesota Tuesday.
