Map shows soybean cyst nematode “marches on”
New research shows soybean cyst nematode continues to spread across North America.
Greg Tylka with Iowa State University says researchers have been mapping known SCN distribution since 2000, and data between 2020 and 2023 reveals 31 counties in 10 states reported the pest for the first time.
“Time marches on, and so does soybean cyst nematode.”
The latest map also shows SCN spreading in Canada, with 10 rural municipalities in Quebec and three counties across Manitoba and Ontario now appearing.
“Most of the new counties are in states that have not had large amounts of soybean cyst nematode in the past, and that have had active scouting programs.”
Tylka says SCN is in every county in Illinois and Iowa, the top two soybean-producing states in the U.S. States with new counties include Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
