Market advisor expects little change in crop plans

A marketing advisor says he is not expecting any big changes in crop plans this spring.

John Heinberg with Total Farm Marketing tells Brownfield farmers are not looking at shifting from soybeans to corn, at least not yet. “I haven’t heard a whole lot of people cutting back. I have heard some that are switching to corn in some areas. Most guys are probably going to stay with their rotation but you know, maybe the western corn belt, North Dakota, South Dakota, you know, may see some more shift from beans to corn.”

Heinberg says the market is not signaling an increase in demand for soybeans in the near term, but farmers could be waiting for more USDA estimates before finalizing planting decisions.

Heinberg says producers should also be paying attention to some 2025-26 corn prices right now. “There’s actually some pretty decent prices out there. You know, if we do see this acreage number jump for corn, we do see a strong Brazil crop, this $4.50, $4.60 area that we’re playing with here on December might be a great place to just at least get the toe in the water and get some things started with the intent that we can find re-ownership over top.”

Heinberg says he’s expecting a large South American soybean supply, but a hot and dry summer with a low U.S. soybean acreage might lead to some domestic premiums because of crush demand.
