Maximizing corn ROI

An extension agronomist has some advice for corn farmers looking to maximize return on investment.

Jeff Coulter with the University of Minnesota says fertilizer rates should be looked at.

“Simply going with the University of Minnesota Extension guidelines for fertilizer rates can many times save quite a bit of money without sacrificing yield.”

He tells Brownfield planting populations can also influence ROI.

“There’s been a trend for farmers to be planting higher and higher plant populations, but in the research that we’ve done over the last three years in corn following corn we found that there was no yield difference between 34,000 seeds per acre and 38,000 seeds per acre.”

Coulter says another crop input to scrutinize is fungicide and whether an in-season application is necessary.
