May turkey hatchery numbers fall

Turkey hatchery numbers for May were down sharply on the year as producers continue their efforts to improve profitability.

The USDA says the number of eggs in incubation at the start of June fell 16% from last year to 23 million, while the number of poults hatched during May declined 8% at 21.8 million head.

The net number of poults placed into meat production was also 8% below a year ago at 20.6 million due to a reduction in laying birds earlier this year.

Poults hatched and placements were both up 2% from April.

The USDA’s next updated annual turkey production projection is out July 12th.
