McKalip feeling ‘confident’ with GM corn panel decision expected soon

The chief ag negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative says he’s optimistic Mexico’s decree banning genetically modified corn imports will be overturned.

Doug McKalip tells Brownfield he expects a panel decision in favor of U.S. corn producers soon. “Things are on track for that case to be wrapped up and we’re looking forward to a decision coming out here as we move into the fall,” he said. “I know our producers are very much looking forward to seeing that decision come out.”

He says the U.S. has held strong in its arguments. “I’m confident we can get back on track holding Mexico accountable to ensure they adhere to the agreement and that we don’t have crops like genetically engineered grain and other products out of the U.S. that are being restricted when the science doesn’t really stand behind that.”

Mexico’s ban was issued in early 2023 and the U.S. Trade Representative filed a dispute settlement under the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement last August.
