McKinney says Mexico eager for USMCA
The USDA Under Secretary for Trade is in Mexico and tells reporters there is a LOT of interest in getting the USMCA ratified, “We heard a lot of people, not just our U.S. friends but their customers, being very upbeat about USMCA both the likelihood of its passage down here and how the agreement came out in the end.”
Ted McKinney says there’s a lot of interest in Mexico, and, also between him and Ag Secretary Perdue, to get steel and aluminum tariffs lifted as soon as possible. He says while there’s been a lot of trade north and south of the U.S. border, “The margins are almost non-existent and you can only do that for so long. So, this is another reason why we hope for those to be lifted.”
McKinney says Mexico has been a strong trading partner for years and some U.S. ag sales have taken place at the trade show going on in Guatemala. Government to government meetings are taking place in Mexico City and McKinney says he’s willing to go back anytime Mexico wants him to. Plus, he says, a full-blown U.S. trade mission to Mexico will take place later this year.
