Meteorologist warns of drier Corn Belt conditions heading into July

An ag meteorologist says he expects a major shift in the U.S. weather pattern at the end of the month.

Matt Makens says conditions in many areas of the Corn Belt will transition to below average precipitation. “Once we hit later June and go through the first and second week of July, when we approach pollination – that timeline in most data, not all, but the vast majority of data available indicates that’s going to turn into a much drier period.”

He tells Brownfield, “And, with that the heat will also boost. We will have a double whammy impact.”

Makens says it’s too soon to know if recent precipitation will keep the soil recharged enough to get through mid-July.
