Mexico buyers still interested in GM-white corn
A farmer in northwest Missouri says buyers in Mexico are still interested in GMO white corn from the United States.
“Basically, they say it comes down to politics and changes in the different administrations.”
Dylan Rosier from Holt County hosted a delegation of Mexican corn buyers on the farm last week as part of a U.S. Grains Council tour. He says there are consequences if Mexico bans U.S. GMO white corn imports.
“Food prices will go up in Mexico if the GM-corn ban goes through and is implemented across the board. I don’t think these buyers wanted to see that and they wanted our corn.”
Mexico issued a GMO corn ban in early 2023 and the U.S. Trade Representative has filed a dispute settlement under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. A decision is expected on the dispute this fall. Rosier says he’s optimistic the outcome of the settlement will be favorable for the United States. So far, Rosier says he hasn’t seen a lack of demand for white corn.
“The industry or market isn’t saying the same thing as the GMO ban is. Things are speeding up and Mexico is bringing in more corn.”
He says Mexico’s grain buyers were impressed with the grain quality during the visit and they said quality doesn’t look the same when it reaches the end-user.
