Mexico pulls back GM corn ban

Mexico is formally repealing its genetically engineered corn import ban.

The U.S. Trade Representative says the action makes ineffective two sets of measures that the USTR successfully challenged in the trade dispute, an immediate ban on the use of GE corn in dough and tortillas and an instruction to Mexican government agencies to gradually eliminate the use of GE corn for other food uses and in animal feed.

Mexico had 45 days from the decision in December to bring its actions in compliance with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement before the US was authorized to impose tariffs because of the ban.

The action comes as the U.S. has agreed to a 30-day pause on 25 percent tariffs on Mexico.
