MFP signup opens Monday

Signup opened today for the latest Market Facilitation Program payments announced last week. They’re part of the Trump Administration’s $16 billion trade aid package.

The agency took input from last year’s program to design the new program so that it would support farmers, said Sonny Perdue, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

“We took a lot of the good things and listened to some of the things that we needed to change,” said Perdue, when announcing the program. “I think that’s what you’ll see in this Market Facilitation Program for 2019.”

The first payment, in mid-to-late August, will be either 50 percent of a producer’s calculated payment or $15 per acre, whichever is higher.

If conditions warrant, the second set of payments will be in November, and the third in early January.

The one-page application provides the USDA with basic contact information and specifics about commodities that have already been harvested to date. Submit the completed form to your FSA county office or send to that office by fax, mail, or email.
