Michigan confirms HPAI in commercial poultry
The first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza since May in a commercial poultry flock has been reported in Michigan.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says the virus has been detected at a facility in Ottawa County. It’s the state’s eighth outbreak in commercial poultry this year and the second case in the county since the virus was first reported in the state in 2022
State veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland says as the weather remains cold and HPAI continues to circulate in wild bird populations, conditions are ideal for the virus to thrive and spread.
In the last 30 days, the USDA says 51 commercial flocks in the U.S. have tested positive for the virus and more than 14 million birds have been affected.
Michigan is one of six states currently required to test for H5N1 at milk processing plants as part of a National Monitoring Strategy to track the virus.
