Michigan Farm Bureau members gather in Grand Rapids
Michigan Farm Bureau members are debating policies that will take priority in the coming year with lawmakers.
Matt Smego, Director of the Public Policy and the Commodity Division, tells Brownfield, “We had over 520 resolutions that were submitted from our 65 county Farm Bureaus and that culminates into the resolution book that the delegates will be looking at this week.”
“As a membership organization with a grassroots process, it gives our farmers across the state a voice and the opportunity to actually make a difference,” he says.
At the state level he says, “Some of the things that will be scheduled for discussion this year is our plant and pests and diseases policy here at the state level, the idea of a certification program for grain dealers, members will talk about wildlife management, we have continued to hear from our members about concerns, particularly with deer and crop damage.”
Members are also crafting federal policy for dairy farmers impacted by highly pathogenic avian influenza and high labor costs.
