Michigan farmer recaps exceptional harvest season
A farmer in Michigan’s thumb-area says favorable weather conditions led to a better-than-expected crop year.
Carla Schultz and her family raise soybeans, corn, pigs, beef cattle, alfalfa, black and navy beans, and wheat. “We actually were above average for both soybeans and corn. That makes me feel good when input costs are high and commodity prices are low.”
She tells Brownfield her area avoided drought conditions late in the summer. “That’s what set us apart. As we watched the fronts come across the country, we were getting hit with that moisture and the rest of the country wasn’t. We prayed that they would get it, but also thankful that we had gotten it.”
Schultz says much of her focus has shifted to the livestock side of the business. She locally sells her protein and says there’s currently some high demand.
