Michigan farmers working on pre-winter fieldwork

Harvesting is complete in Michigan, as farmers move on to other pre-winter activities.

USDA reporters say Michigan farmers are planting cover crops, testing soil, applying herbicides and fertilizer, spreading lime and manure, testing soil, and hauling grain.

Additional moisture last week helped improve the winter wheat condition.  Twenty-one percent of the winter wheat is in excellent condition, with 56% rated good and 22% rated fair.

Overall, eleven percent of Michigan has surplus topsoil moisture, with 73% of farmland having adequate moisture.

USDA’s weekly crop progress reports are done for 2024 and will resume in the spring.
