Michigan sweet cherry growers eligible for emergency assistance
Northern Michigan sweet cherry growers can now receive federal disaster assistance following significant insect and disease damage.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer made the request to USDA after farmers lost up to 75 percent of their crop following the mild winter and warm, wet early growing season.
Farmers have eight months to apply for low-interest emergency loans to help cover part of their actual losses.
Areas receiving primary support include Antrim, Grand Traverse, and Leelanau counties. Growers in eight contiguous counties are also included in the designation including Benzie, Crawford, Manistee, Otsego, Charlevoix, Kalkaska, Missaukee, and Wexford.
