Michigan Tree Fruit Commission will continue

The Michigan Tree Fruit Research and Development Program has been approved for the next five years by growers.

Seventy percent of the votes casts, representing more than 80 percent the total production, voted for it to continue.

The program was created in 2014 to support research stations, and research and extension programs focused on tree fruit including apples, cherries, peaches and plums.

Producers are currently assessed at a maximum rate of $2.50 per ton for cherries sold; four cents per hundredweight for apples sold; $2.00 per ton for peaches sold; and $4.50 per ton for plums sold.  Assessments can be adjusted each year by the Tree Fruit Commission within a sliding scale.
