Michigan wheat crop continues to advance ahead of recent years

The executive director of the Michigan Wheat Program says the crop is progressing ahead of average as harvest nears.

Jody Pollock-Newsom tells Brownfield, “This year, it just seemed like everything just fell together well.”

“As we’ve done the plot tours, people seem pretty happy, so it’s exciting,” she shares.

The USDA says Michigan wheat is 83 percent headed and condition is rated 61 percent good to excellent.  

Pollock-Newsom credits the Great Lakes Yield Enhancement Network for helping growers be more attuned to their crops and the timing of key management decisions.

Nearly all of the state’s corn crop has been planted, with 77 percent emerged, and condition is rated 68 percent good to excellent.

Soybeans are 89 percent planted, 73 percent emerged, and rated 67 percent good to excellent.

Pollock-Newsom says the YEN program has helped direct research priorities over the past five years.

Current planting and nitrogen management trials will be highlighted during the Michigan Wheat Program’s upcoming summer field day at the Michigan State University Saginaw Valley Research Center on June 16^th.
