Michigan Wheat Program checkoff renewal focused on research to improve yields and quality
A state leader says the recent renewal of the Michigan Wheat Program checkoff will help the organization continue to promote the industry.
Executive director Jody Pollok-Newsom says the program develops solutions for profitable production, marketing, and utilization of wheat on behalf of its farmers.
“This takes not just the research, but our grower partners to find out what’s going on in growers’ fields, and that’s helping fuel some of the topics for our research program, so that we can really look at what’s going to make the difference and what’s going to get our growers over 100 bushels,” she says.
She tells Brownfield the group continues to invest in new research methods to focus on improving yields.
“We’re always looking to see what the next five bushels can do and what can we do in times like this when things are so economically tight,” she says. “What can we do to help make a difference for our growers and to keep more money in their pocket?”
Newsom says the recent continuation ensures the program will remain intact for the next five years.
