Midwest Meat Summit kicks off in Des Moines
The inaugural Midwest Meat Summit is underway in Des Moines.
Margaret Chamas with Practical Farmers of Iowa says the event is all about making connections across the entire value chain.
“People producing the live animals on the ground, all the way through the people selling it to or serving it to people who are eating it on their plates. So making connections between and across people at those different points along the chain.”
She tells Brownfield a lack of consumer willingness to pay what it actually costs to produce meat in a sustainable, regenerative, holistic, or organic way remains a challenge.
“If you want it local, if you want it regional, if you want it fresh, it’s going to cost a bit more. But here’s all the really good things we’re doing to strengthen the communities around all these different industries.”
