Milk production up in September

Milk production rose slightly in September and for the third quarter overall.

USDA says September production in the 24 major milk producing states was 17.5 billion pounds, up two-tenths of a percent from a year ago but lower than the previous month.  August production was revised to 18.2 billion pounds, half a percent higher than August of 2023 and half a percent higher than last month’s preliminary estimate.

Third quarter milk production was up slightly on the year.  The July to September production totaled 56 billion pounds, just slightly higher than the same period last year.

USDA says there were 9.33 million head of dairy cattle during the third quarter, three thousand fewer head than the second quarter of this year and 41-thousand few than the third quarter of 2023.

There were no surprises in statistics for production by states.  California remains the top milk producer with 3.211 billion pounds, followed by Wisconsin with 2.621 billion pounds, with Idaho, Texas, and New York rounding out the top five.  Michigan still gets the most milk per cow, averaging 2,325 pounds per cow with Colorado 2nd with 2,200 pounds per cow.
