Minnesota Congressman points to Senate farm bill as a guide
House Ag Committee member and farm bill conferee Tim Walz says his chamber should follow the lead of the Senate on SNAP to get the 2018 Farm Bill across the finish line.
The Minnesota Democrat tells Brownfield House Republicans have to recognize the farm bill has always been bipartisan.
“And quite honestly, from the very beginning they’ve done something that’s never been done before, they went at it alone.”
The House farm bill that narrowly passed in June included stricter work requirements in the nutrition program. The Senate version did not and passed with strong bipartisan support.
“So very candidly, I think they need to move to the position where the Senate’s at. It’s certainly not the bill i would’ve written, but it is a compromise that I think will certainly get if not dozens, potentially 100 Democrats or so on board. (then) We can pass this thing into law.”
Walz also prefers how the Senate farm bill deals with payment limitations and the Conservation Stewardship Program, saying the House version would gut CSP.
The conference committee has its first meeting September 5th. The current Farm Bill is set to expire September 30th.
