Minnesota crops off to strong start as planting nears completion

Minnesota’s commissioner of agriculture is encouraged by crop progress across the state.

Thom Petersen tells Brownfield planting is winding down and recent moisture is beneficial.

“Seems like the rains came really timely, so that has kind of been helpful as the crop got put in. A few replants in areas from that big dust storm we had, but nothing too major. So I think the crop is in good shape.”

USDA’s latest weekly crop progress update shows corn planting is essentially wrapped up, with nearly 80 percent of the crop rated in good to excellent condition.

Soybeans are 98 percent planted and 83 percent emerged, with 77 percent called good to excellent.
