Minnesota farmer can finally “think spring”

A farmer in southern Minnesota says before this week it was hard to imagine prepping for fieldwork this spring.

“We don’t have a heated shop all year round that we can be getting equipment ready (in), so it’s starting to get the blood pumping now and saying it’s time to get busy.”

Sam Ziegler of Good Thunder tells Brownfield the 2019 crop is coming into focus.

“We’re on track with the seed orders, and the rest of the financing is in place. So I think we’re excited about it.”

Following a wet 2018 and additional saturation so far this year, he’s hopeful the law of averages will make for a smooth planting season.

“Last summer, then into the fall and winter we had a lot of moisture, so we’re about due to have a little break. So I’m optimistic that we’re going to be able to get in at a normal time and be hard at it by the 20th of April.”

He says if they’re able to plant in a timely fashion, the crop rotation will be half corn and half soybeans.

Brownfield interviewed Ziegler at the AURI New Uses Forum in Minneapolis Wednesday.
