Minnesota farmer concerned for emerging crops in weekend heat

Unseasonably warm conditions are causing some concern for emerging crops in west-central Minnesota.

Anne Schwagerl farms in Big Stone County and says temperatures could reach the 90’s this weekend.

“And I’m watching the little corn and bean plants come out of the ground and hoping that things don’t fry before we can get a little shot of rain. The heat feels nice, but the timing is tough.”

She tells Brownfield planting is ahead of schedule in her area.

“And that feels good, that feels like we’re giving the crop the longest runway it can have to put on a good crop. Now we’re just ready for some rain to come.”

Schwagerl, who serves as vice president of Minnesota Farmers Union, says unfortunately early season weeds don’t seem to mind the hot, dry weather.
