Minnesota farmer expecting another tough year

A west-central Minnesota farmer anticipates another difficult year in 2025.

Anne Schwagerl and her husband own and operate a diversified grain and livestock farm in Big Stone County.

“It’s going to be another tough year. This year was tough because we had relatively low prices, but then we got hammered on the weather. That flash drought in August and September really hurt the bean production.”

She tells Brownfield a good snowpack this winter would help replenish soil moisture.

“We’re looking for hopefully some good production, hopefully the weather holds and we can have some good growing conditions in ’25. Because the prices right now aren’t making it look too nice.”

Schwagerl serves as vice president of the Minnesota Farmers Union and Brownfield interviewed her during last month’s MFU Convention in the Twin Cities.
