Minnesota farmer sees silver lining to weather challenges

A south-central Minnesota farmer sees a silver lining to the weather extremes his crops have endured this season.

“The one thing that extreme weather conditions can (do) is really teach us some things.”

That’s Kevin Poppel, a corn and soybean grower from Madelia.  Poppel tells Brownfield he’s zeroing in on nitrogen management.

“Extreme weather like this really proves to us the value of split-applications of nutrients and not having all your eggs in one basket.”

Planting delays and excess moisture are among the weather challenges Poppel has faced so far this season.  He says a year like this can really highlight what a farmer does well and reveal areas that need improvement.
