Minnesota Farmers Union VP concerned with farm bill separation
There’s concern moving key pieces of the farm bill into a reconciliation package could negatively impact agriculture.
Minnesota Farmers Union vice president Anne Schwagerl joined other members in Washington D.C. last week to urge Congress to pass a new comprehensive five-year farm bill.
“We met directly with the Ranking Members of the House and Senate, Senator Klobuchar and Representative Craig, (and) there’s a desire to get it done but get it done right. And I think the concern here is the proposed separation of managing it in reconciliation.”
She tells Brownfield House Ag Committee Ranking Member Angie Craig told her reconciliation is not how Congress gets a farm bill done.
“Get a farm bill done through regular order, and we do it with broad bipartisan support because we know that a farm bill touches every American.”
The House Ag Committee is scheduled to consider its portion of the budget reconciliation bill that includes elements of the farm bill on Tuesday.
