Minnesota legislators aware of African swine fever threat

Livestock groups are making sure Minnesota lawmakers understand the threat of foreign animal diseases like African swine fever.

House Ag and Food, Finance and Policy Division chair Jeanne Poppe says emergency preparedness is being talked about a lot in St. Paul.

“Making sure that we are ready for a possibility of African swine fever, or other related kinds of diseases. Just making sure we’re available to assist there.”

She tells Brownfield the Legislature put money into disease prevention last year, and will look into bonding to find dollars for the veterinary diagnostic lab in Willmar.

“They could purchase some kits and have access to some things that would make sure that if and when, if we do get (ASF), that we have resources to be able to address it quickly.”

Poppe says a quick response will be crucial if African swine fever is discovered in the U.S.
