Minnesota Soybean engaged on public water inventory
The Minnesota Soybean Growers Association is engaged with legislators on water regulations.
President Darin Johnson says concerns over the state’s public water inventory carried over from last year’s legislative session.
“That did not quite end where we wanted it to, and we’re just really looking for regulatory certainty on it. Because with the maps the way they are for the state of Minnesota, it does open up some potential lawsuits for our farmers in the state of Minnesota.”
He tells Brownfield a lack of definition could have a significant impact.
“With the possibility of using lidar (high-resolution imagery) to figure that out, there could’ve been almost up to 27,000 miles added to the public water inventory.”
Johnson says MSGA will continue seeking regulatory certainty because the public waters definition as it stands leaves Minnesota farmers “very exposed.”
