Minnesota Wheat president says farmers need the certainty of a new farm bill
The president of the Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers hopes Congress prioritizes the farm bill early in 2026.
Kevin Leiser says farmers need certainty.
“The biggest thing is if you get it done then you’ve got some certainty about how these programs are going to work. Uncertainty is worse than actually knowing what is going on, so the biggest thing is to just get it done so we’ve got an idea of where we’re sitting for the next few years instead of everything up in the air.”
He tells Brownfield there needs to be an adequate safety net for growers dealing with low commodity prices and high input costs.
“A lot of guys are holding off doing their fall fertilizer and that type of stuff because they just can’t see putting all that money out there until they know what they’re going to plant, and they’re kind of searching for what crop might actually work out for this coming year.”
Leiser grows several crops in northwest Minnesota and says he’s considering changes to his rotation for 2026.
