Iowa’s state climatologist says he’s concerned about river levels across the region.
Justin Glisan tells Brownfield he’s been tracking the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. “They still continue to be low. These states within the Upper Midwest that feed into the Missouri and Mississippi Basins have a lack of snowpack up there and a lack of melting.”
Glisan says drought conditions along those river systems could cause some supply chain issues heading into spring.
When it comes to inland waterways, he says, “The streams that are near-normal are frozen, so we need to be thinking about ice damming. We could see some localized flooding if everything sets up correctly. Talking about our hydrological system, the larger rivers are still below average.”
Some parts of the Midwest received scattered rain showers on Friday.
