Missouri Ag Department to implement ‘fake meat’ guidelines
The Missouri Department of Agriculture (MDA) will implement new guidelines in labeling so-called fake meat. They include clearly stating that the product doesn’t come from animals. Labels have to say next to the product name that it’s plant-based, lab-grown or something similar, according to Chris Chinn, director of the MDA.
“We want to make sure that consumers are able to determine very easily whether it came from an animal or poultry,” said Chinn, “or if it is from a plant or grown in a lab.”
Chinn says manufacturers have until January to make label changes and to move products with existing labels off grocery store shelves.
She says Missouri is the first state to take steps to prevent misrepresentation of products as meat that are not derived from livestock or poultry.
