Missouri farmers battle flooded fields as more rain enters forecast

Some central Missouri farmers have been busy draining water out of river bottom ground following the heavy rains earlier this week.

Andy Clay raises corn and soybeans in Moniteau County. 

“Sunday into Monday morning, we had just a little over nine inches of rain, which obviously is about three weeks in a row of having over five inches every week.”

Clay tells Brownfield “Replant is growing weekly. We’ve got some corn that’s been underwater since Monday morning, but like I said, we’re pumping hard to try to get the water off of it as fast as possible, with the hopes of saving as much of it as we can.”

Nathan Alpers raises corn and soybeans in Cooper County.

“I’m certain we’ve lost one farm. It’s just got three feet of water on it in places probably, and I just don’t think we can get it pumped off quick enough. It’s pretty ugly down there right now.”

Drew Lerner with World Weather Incorporated says there were some impressive rains in central and southwest Missouri earlier this week, with localized totals up to 10 inches.

Lerner tells Brownfield portions of other states experienced heavy rain totals including Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin, with up to six inches of rain, locally, Saturday through Monday night.

There’s more rain in the forecast later this week in Missouri.
