Missouri farmers gain early planting momentum ahead of rains

Some Missouri farmers made some early planting progress ahead of the recent rains.

Jay Fischer in central Missouri says there’s some oats and corn in the ground, with emergence expected to take longer due to cool temps.

“It’s supposed to be cloudy and cool for a few days, temperatures up and down. It’ll take a little longer (to emerge) this time of year.”

Patrick Seyer in southeast Missouri, and chairman of the Missouri Corn Merchandising Council, tells Brownfield he’s planted all his rice, all the early bean acres possible and about one-third of his corn.

“It (corn) actually went in the ground quite nicely. It’s probably on the top of ground we were putting it in,” he says. “It was quite better than normal because it’s been a little dry. Hopefully that’s going to turn out okay. A little shower would help it out.”

Both farmers say the recent rains were much needed for the crops and the upcoming growing season.
