Missouri groups ramp up hunger relief efforts through Drive to Feed Kids grants

The director of Missouri Farmers Care says there has been an increased interest in feeding local communities in Missouri this fall.

Ashley McCarty says the MFC Foundation is awarding more grants than usual for the Drive to Feed Kids, which invests in local hunger relief.

“While the Drive to Feed kids makes a difference, it’s really just the the kickstart to a lot of amazing things that go on with community support all across the state.”

McCarty says 4-H and FFA groups, collegiate and technical center organizations have local events throughout the year to feed hungry people in Missouri.

“There may be 4-H clubs or FFA chapters building a local mobile food pantry and then filling that all year, things like that.” she says. “First projects are already done. Actually, it was the Mizzou Collegiate Farm Bureau. The Linn County 4-H had an event two days ago and there are projects underway in Ray County from November 4 through 17.”

Some of the events are happening at a time when nutrition program benefits are being impacted by a government shutdown.

“You can feel a bit of the panic of people that have been relying on assistance that aren’t going to see it in this coming month.”
