Missouri Leopold winner has embraced cover crops

A north-central Missouri farm couple has been chosen for the Leopold Conservation award for their conservation practices.  Matt Lambert and his wife Kate have a diversified farm in Linn County, raising corn, soybeans and cattle.

He tells Brownfield Ag News, “Since I’ve come back from college (in 2008), we’ve continued to no-till but we’ve implemented the use of cover crops. We diversified by adding cattle to our crop rotations. We let them graze the cover crops and I think it’s really helped out our ecosystems and stuff on our farm.”

Lambert was quick to say a lot of farmers in his area are using cover crops and working to conserve the land. The award was sponsored by the Missouri Farmers Care Coalition, Missouri Corn Growers, Missouri Soybean Association and the Missouri Association of Soil and Water Conservation districts in partnership with the Sand County Foundation.
