Missouri NRCS funding drought relief efforts

Missouri NRCS is providing $2-Million-dollars towards drought relief for livestock.
“Of all the Midwest states, Missouri is suffering the most,” State Conservationist JR Flores tells Brownfield Ag News the emergency initiative offered through the EQIP program will be used to drill cover crops into existing pastures or hay land. The cover crops established from that effort can be grazed or hayed. He says producers do not have to be enrolled in EQIP to apply.
The U.S. drought monitor released Thursday shows 25 Missouri counties in severe drought, which will be given assistance first.
Flores says, “Two million dollars for assistance should go a long way, particularly for our most extreme drought counties, but if we find that the need is greater than that I will be asking our national headquarters for additional funding.”
Missouri livestock producers can apply through their local NRCS office through the end of August.
