Missouri Right to Repair ag equipment bill debated

A Missouri House Agriculture committee heard testimony to a so-called right-to-repair bill that would apply to ag equipment.

Missouri Farm Bureau’s B.J. Tanksley says they support the legislation which is in line with their policy and support the role of ag equipment dealers in agriculture, “We understand there may be some questions about internal coding and things like that and I don’t think Farm Bureau would say that we want to go too far with this. We want to make  sure we’re being safe, too, with all equipment but at the same time want to make sure that we’re striking a balance of farmers and ranchers being able to repair the equipment that they’ve paid so much for.”

Southeast Missouri farmer Aaron Porter, who grows cotton, corn and soybeans in Stoddard County, testified against the bill saying it goes far beyond right-to-repair….

“If it were simply about the right to repair, it would be unnecessary because the ability exists today for me as a customer or an independent repair person to purchase the same diagnostic equipment, software, and wiring harnesses that John Deere dealers purchase for their factory-trained technicians.”

Porter and equipment dealers who testified in opposition say the bill would allow manipulation of the horsepower which could be covered up after the fact and reduce the safety and value of used ag equipment.

  • So it’s ok for someone to work on their car and drive amongst others but not ok to work on a tractor which is pretty much used on an empty field. This article is complete garbage.
