Missouri to begin tracking Alpha-gal Syndrome under newly signed law

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has signed a bill into law authorizing Missouri’s Department of Health and Senior Services to begin tracking and reporting Alpha-gal Syndrome.

Missouri Cattlemen’s Association Past President Jeff Reed tells Brownfield “You’ve got to have the data to support it, to get other people interested in coming up with cures or a vaccine or whatever treatment options there are out there.”

Alpha-gal syndrome is an allergy to red meat or dairy caused by a Lone Star tick bite, and Reed says there seems to be an increase in cases in rural areas across the state.

“We have quite a few producers and really their children, you know, outside playing in rural areas that that have Alpha-gal.”

Senate Bill 2372 was sponsored by Representative Tara Peters and Senator Mike Bernskoetter, and it’s scheduled to go into effect at the end of August.
