Mitloehner issues warning about Lancet report

There have been dozens of anti-meat and anti-animal ag initiatives over the years, most of which have died quickly without receiving much attention.

But University of California-Davis animal scientist and air quality Extension specialist Dr. Frank Mitloehner says, in his opinion, the recent EAT-Lancet report is the most dangerous of them all.

“This is the most aggressive attempt I’ve even seen prescribing what we shall eat,” Mitloehner says.

The Lancet report goes beyond mere recommendations for a healthier diet and proposes ways to force changes, Mitloehner says.

“If you are meat eater, you would be taxed very heavily on red meat, on processed meat,” he says. “Some of the suggestions are for a 130 percent meat tax on selected cuts of meat.”

The report also pushes for reduced dairy and egg consumption. Mitloehner says it’s is a well-coordinated and well-funded effort and needs to be taken seriously by the ag community.

“Because these are people who want to depict you as being environmentally-destructive, inhumane to animals, unsafe in your practices leading to a poor-quality product—in other words, it is a frontal attack on your legacy and you have to decide, as an individual, whether you allow that to happen.”

Mitloehner spoke with Brownfield at the recent Iowa Pork Congress.
