Mix of fieldwork happening in central Iowa

There’s a lot of fieldwork happening in the heart of Iowa this week.

Channel agronomist Matthew Nelson covers the central part of the state.

“As you drive through the countryside you do see a mix of activity. Just this morning driving through the (Highway) 20 corridor, anhydrous going on, tillage, people spraying putting their preemergence applications on, and also people planting. So definitely a very busy week here in Iowa.”

He tells Brownfield most farmers are planting corn, but a few are putting in soybeans.

“We do see a yield advantage to planting beans early, so I think there’s a mix of both. And I would say as we approach the weekend we’ll probably see some farmers switch to soybeans because the weekend forecast does not look all that inviting for the stuff that we have planted.”

Nelson says this is about a week to ten days earlier than when farmers got in the field last year.
