Mixed month for turkey hatchery numbers

Turkey hatchery numbers for April were down on the year, leading to some mixed signals about production.

The USDA says there were 23.849 million turkey eggs in incubation at the start of May, 4% lower than a year ago, while the number of poults hatched during April were 21.243 million head, down 1%.

That’s expected to lead to tighter placements later this year.

20.501 million poults were placed into meat production last month, a decline of 1% from a year ago, but overall, net placements are slightly ahead of last year’s pace.

The USDA is projecting a year-to-year increase in turkey production from 2025 to 2026 and from 2026 to 2027, with the next guess out June 11th.
